The Italian pronoun “ci” is highly versatile with several uses. There are four main uses you should know about the pronoun “ci” as an intermediate Italian learner.
As a reflexive pronoun, “ci” means “ourselves”, for example, “Ci svegliamo presto” (We wake up ourselves early). It can also replace a place or location, meaning “there”, as in “Ci sei già stato?” (Have you been there?).
It also functions as a direct object pronoun meaning “us”. For example, “Ci chiamano alle due” (They are calling us at two). Last, as an indirect object pronoun meaning “to us”, for example, “Ci scrivono una lettera” (They are writing a letter to us).
